Jennet Alterman received her BA from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. She was also educated at Davidson College and the University of California Santa Cruz, and was recognized as a Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at College of Charleston in 2008.
Jennet has served as the Executive Director of the Center for Women in Charleston, SC since 2001; she received the SCANPO Award for Excellence in Management in 2005 and was awarded a 5 year grant in 2011 to launch the S.C. Women’s Business Center. The Center for Women also received a grant from Oprah Winfrey’s Angel Network for Programming Excellence in 2006. Under Jennet’s Leadership, the Center for Women has grown into the largest women’s organization, with well over 1,000 members.
Jennet’s previous positions include CFO of Alterman Studios, Director of the Coastal Training Institute for NOAA’s Coastal Services Center, Country Director and Interagency Coordinator for the Peace Corps, and multiple positions within South Carolina’s State Budget and Control Board, including Public Relations Director. Jennet Alterman also served as Press Secretary and Deputy Lieutenant Governor for the office of the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1980-1983.
Jennet’s extensive community service experience includes service on the boards of the Charleston County Housing Authority, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Footlight Players, the SC Nature Conservancy, the League of Women Voters, the Lowcountry Heritage Corridor, and the Mbabne Theatre Club.
In 2013, Jennet Alterman was voted S.C. Women in Business’ Advocate of the Year.
